I've= been part of the Bundaberg LifeFlight crew since 2023, and I feel very muc= h part of the community here.=C2=A0 **In March 2025, the crew and I were called to the scene of 15-year-old Ava= 's accident after she was thrown from her horse and onto a metal fence.=C2= =A0** Ava was an interesting story. When we first got to Ava, I conducted a full = assessment given her severe abdominal pain and obvious facial injury. **My = concern was for significant internal trauma with a surgical catastrophe goi= ng on in there.** I really pushed for her to go to Brisbane.=C2=A0At one point, I said to Ava= 's mum: ***"******if she were my daughter, I'd be taking her to Brisbane."*= ** In cases like Ava's where there was concern for complex internal injurie= s, a tertiary children's hospital offers immediate access to paediatric sur= gical expertise that simply aren't available outside the big centres.=C2=A0 We used our monitoring equipment to keep a close eye on her vitals during t= he flight. Analgesia was provided to keep her comfortable for the journey, = and she was placed on spinal precautions given the mechanism of injury. Blood products were prepared and immediately available if needed.
